Wine & Cigar Art
Salt Lake City Weekly; I've often thought of great winemakers as
artists. These are people for whom the soil and grapes make up the artists'
palette, and the art itself is created first in casks and fermentation tanks,
until ultimately dispensed in bottles.
But Sara Henry has a slightly
different perspective on wine and art. As the owner of Park City's new The Art
of Wine store, she is surrounded by art and other treasures, all devoted to the
enhancement and enjoyment of wine.

56 million bubbles tell quite a tale
Northwest Herald reports; The House of Bollinger
and a well-respected champagne maker claim there are 56 million bubbles in every
bottle of champagne.
Wine geeks have studied bubbles for more than 250
years. A bubble is a tiny film of liquid filled with CO2. This gas is not
injected by a carbonator, like in a can of soda, but made through a much slower
process using yeast. The fat bubbles of soda pop are generally uniform. This is
not true of champagne.

Beer IS king but wine is close behind
Associated Press reports; If you sometimes find
yourself ordering a glass of wine or a mixed drink when you used to order a beer,
you're not alone.
Wines and distilled spirits continue to gain a bigger
share of the alcoholic beverage market, at the expense of the beer industry.
It's a trend that has been going on since the late 1990s and continued
in 2004. Analysts who follow the alcoholic beverage industry don't see it
stopping anytime soon.

Retailers take time to find the perfect wine
Bradenton Herald reports; Mondher Kobrosly
greets customers with samples of wine and cheese when they walk into Time Saver
Food Store in Holmes Beach.
Then he'll spend up to an hour navigating
them through his selection of 500 wines toward the perfect bottle. Selling wine
is a competitive sport that pits small retailers against each other, grocery
stores and outlet chains. Local retailers, however, have devised clever tactics
for survival through creative marketing, strategic inventories, and an emphasis
on good, old-fashioned customer service.

Stemless wineglasses are making a splash
Toronto Star reports; Wine connoisseurs
have dedicated years of painstaking study to discovering how the shape of a glass
affects the bouquet, taste, balance and finish of a wine.
Now Riedel
Crystal, the glassmaker that developed the concept of different shaped glasses
for different wines, has introduced a new series that goes against conventional
wisdom - the glasses don't have stems.
